Food Safety for You and Your Family - Food

FOOD SAFETY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

Time Magazine named poultry as one of the deadliest items in the American home. One of the deadliest! The reason poultry is so dangerous is because of disease-causing microorganisms that survive from the chicken factories to your dinner table. Chickens are not the only culprits. Seafood, actually, is the number one cause of food sickness. Recent media reports outbreaks of contamination in spinach, peanut butter, beef, raspberries, with new crises breaking out seemingly on a regular basis. The fact is, over 5,000 people die each year of food poisoning in the United States alone. Around the world, the figures are much higher and difficult to gauge due to under-reporting or no reporting at all. Thanks to growing awareness and education, Food Safety is now a top priority for consumers, government regulators and food industry leaders. The President of the U.S. recently established the InterAgency Working Group on Import Safety, with a focus on Food Safety, to address specifi c ways to improve the safety and quality of our food supply. Carol Tucker Foreman is the leading consumer advocate for Food Safety as founder of Consumer Federation of America. She has spearheaded legislation and public awareness campaigns that have led to drastic changes in US policy. She refers to the USDA meat inspection as late as 1990 as a "poke-and-sniff" method. Thanks in large part to Ms. Foreman, our food supply is becoming safer. With groups such as the Center For Science in the Public Interest, Safe Tables Our Priority (S.T.O.P.), FightBac! and the Grocery Manufacturers of America/Food Products Association working for the public interest, our food supply continues to grow safer each year. Yet, with international trade of foodstuffs expanding every day, new strategies and resources will be necessary to ensure that we can count on the safety and quality of every meal, every time. Be sure to keep food safety in mind when shopping and especially in the kitchen. Prop er handling, cleaning, cooking and storage are essential. Don't cross-contaminate meats and vegetables. Abide by expiration dates, and search for natural, healthy and clean products for you and your family.
