Protecting Windows During a Storm - Home - Home Security

If you live in an area that is prone to severe storms and hurricanes, you are familiar with the risks that storms can impose. In these areas it is wise to take measures before a storm to protect your home. When the storm inevitably comes, you won't have to scramble around trying to protect what you can. A major area of focus when taking preventive measures is window protection.

It is important to keep your windows intact during a severe storm or hurricane. If you're not careful, windows can quickly become holes in your home. The glass of windows is extremely weak and vulnerable, and once broken can cause a lot of damage. Foreign objects can be blown into the windows, causing damage to anything or anyone inside. Potentially even more damaging is the dramatic difference in air pressure when a window is broken. This change in air pressure makes a roof collapse many times more likely.

If you live somewhere that experiences frequent storms like Fort Myers, hurricane shutters can probably already be seen on houses all around you. These hurricane shutters are probably the best available protection for your windows. They come in all sorts of varieties, from roll out screens to accordions. These shutters are barely visible when not in use, so they detract very little from the aesthetic value of your home. When open, they completely cover your window and protect it from anything a storm might throw at it.

You may feel that your insurance is good enough to cover any damages to your home. However, insurance companies don't always come through like you hope they will. Also, many insurance providers offer discounts in rates to people to take steps to protect their homes.

Severe storms and natural disasters will always be frightening when they come, but by protecting your windows you can make the event a little less scary. Once you've addressed your windows, you can move on to other issues confronting those weathering a storm.
