Do-It-Yourself Home Improvement: Refinishing Your Deck - Home - DIY

Adding a deck onto your home always makes an excellent home improvement project and can drastically increase the value of your home. Decks can be used for many different purposes and can be built to the size that you want depending on its purpose. If you want to add a deck on simply to use as a mini-grilling station and outdoor eatery, smaller is the way to go. If you have a large family or often do a lot of entertaining during the warmer months, a larger deck would be more suitable. Regardless of the size of your deck, refinishing your deck can be an excellent home improvement project when it begins to look weathered or no longer has that "new" look to it.

When refinishing your deck, the first thing you should do is clean your deck. Using a power washer or an intense water stream nozzle on your water hose are the best tools to use to clean off your deck. This helps loosen and get rid of any dirt, weeds, or other plants that appear in the cracks of your deck boards. If this doesn't work in its entirety, using a sharp tool to scrape out the dirt in the cracks will be your next step. If you have to do this re-washing your deck with a power washer or water hose will be necessary.

The next step is sanding down your deck to get rid of any splintered wood. This step is necessary to create a smooth surface to work with. If you are trying to refinish your deck with splintered wood or cracked boards your project will not be successful.

Next, stain your deck. You can either use the same color that your deck was prior to sanding it down or you can choose a more modernized color that will enhance the style of your deck. Be wary of the type of stain you choose and consult with hardware store professionals to choose the best brand of stain for the wood that was used to build your deck as well as choosing a color of stain that will best match the color of the siding of your home.

The last step is to apply your deck with a finish. This will help protect your deck from becoming weathered or stripped and may also prevent further splintering of the wood. Using a finish that is waterproof, that will preserve the wood, and provides protection from ultraviolet rays is the best to use. Finish can be applied with paintbrushes or even a roller paint brush which may be a better option to save you from unnecessary injury.

Most families that have a deck utilize quite often during the summer months. It makes a perfect place to sit out and relax, have a small social gathering, or for grilling out and enjoying a nice healthy meal with your family. Refinishing your deck to provide a more modernized look will make your home look more appealing and will increase the purpose of your deck as well as the value of your home.
