Feng Shui Home Staging and Design Tips - Home - Interior Design

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese approach to the way our environment affects us. It originated about 3000 years ago. Feng Shui believes that the way we feel and act is related to our surrounding environment. The concept is that improving our surroundings and the way that they are organized can change and improve our lives.

When decorating with Feng Shui, the main focus is to create balance and harmony. Principles involve the movement of energy and moving any blocked areas so the energy can flow at a balanced and harmonized pace throughout a room or home.

Although the manner of achieving balance and harmony is unique to each individual, there are a number of tips to help learn the Feng Shui way.

Tip #1: Define your Bagua. This is a tool is a map or chart that relates the various areas of your life to the 8 sections of your living space. It lays out the main energy centers that we value the most.

Tip #2: Personalize your home to include pieces that provoke positive memories or feelings and remove any pieces that are a remembrance of negativity.

Tip #3: De-clutter. Your home should only include objects that you need, use, love, or that evoke a positive memory. All others should be donated to charity or thrown out.

Tip #4: Organize the pieces that you keep. Having papers lying around or tools and gadgets that you do not need on a regular basis creates a sense of anxiety. Store these objects in an organized fashion so that they are easy to locate when needed, but "out of site out of mind" when not needed.

Tip #5: Bring Nature indoors. Sunlight rejuvenates your energy. Allow it to shine in. Plants and flowers create a sense of freshness and peace. They signify growth and provide oxygen. Spread these throughout your home and care for them well.

Tip #6: Decorate with colors to influence a feeling. Colors will provoke a different emotion for individuals so determining what feeling you get when around a color is an important step. If you have a positive feeling, like joy or relaxation, when visiting a friend or family's home, take note of the colors in the room. Use similar colors to these when creating a feeling for your own rooms.

Typically, colors provoke the following sensations- Red= Good Luck Yellow= Longevity Purple= Luck Green= Freshness, Peace, GrowthWhite= DeathDarker Colors= Relaxing or DepressingLighter Colors= Uplifting or AnnoyingExtreme Bright Colors= Exhilarating or Aggravating

Tip #7: When arranging bedroom furniture, position the bed with a clear view of the entry. This will allow balanced energy to flow to you when you are sleeping. If your bed can not be positioned this way, use a mirror on the opposite side to reflect the energy entering from the doorway.

Tip #8: For Feng Shui home staging and design in the kitchen, the stove should face the entrance. Having your back to the doorway will prevent energy from flowing to you while you cook. Again, mirrors can be used to reflect the energy if the stove cannot be positioned toward the doorway.

Tip #9: Entryways to the home should be clutter free. This includes removing any objects blocking the path to the front door and trimming overgrown buses or hedges so the view is clear. The entry is the key spot to letting positive energy flow into your home.

Tip #10: The air quality of your home is important. Avoid chemical use when cleaning or smoking inside your home. Strongly scented candles can also create bad air quality. Open your windows when possible to allow fresh air to circulate through. Other options are to invest in an air purifier, a humidifier, or a dehumidifier, depending on your need.

These basic Feng Shui tips will help you begin to create a balance and harmonized flow of energy in your home.
